Link exchange is one of the most popular ways how to get links pointed to your website absolutely for free.
And listed below are its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages
If you don't have a lot of external and internal links as of yet, and you're just starting out, link exchange may be right for you. With a good page rank and some really good links, you could be at the top of search engines fairly quickly. External links could also increase traffic significantly which would help with page rank and possible conversions. Links can also help in driving traffic to your web site and traffic can substantially help page rank and maybe even conversions. If you want more conversions, give link exchanges a shot; you never know what may benefit you enough to give you that little extra spice and get you more conversions. The more traffic you can get to your site, the more revenue your site will bring in. Along with all this could come an increase in popularity of your business and product.

Disadvantages
The links you add to your page could be actually taking customers attention off of your product. Think about it, if you were to go on a site which featured several links, wouldn't you want to try clicking on one of them? In other words, you may be driving away your potential customers.

You see, link exchanges are considered off-white SEO. Google pretty much doesn't like link exchanges that simply result in a straight swap. Really, in the eyes of Google, your reciprocal links are pretty much trash. Some people have told me that a triangle type of link system works better. Do this by using a different URL for your link on their page than the URL that you are placing the other companies link on. Trading links straight across is a big problem; search engines like Google really don't look highly upon it.

Advantages of bringing in a highly targeted readership (for link exchanges where all members of the exchange have similar web sites), of increasing the "link popularity" of a site.

Disadvantages of potentially distracting visitors away to other sites before they have fully explored the site that the original link was on.

The greatest disadvantage of Link Exchange is that it can divert the visitors on the website to other websites as soon as a visitor has gone through the index page of the original website.
